The best idea here is simple: Sometimes the story you tell about your life becomes a way of avoiding your life. That’s what I really like about this.

“Self-surveillance with better lighting.” That’s sharp.

You take something we usually call self-awareness and ask, what if you’re just watching yourself all the time? That’s interesting. But I think the piece needs a little more life.

Right now, there’s a lot of thinking. A lot of explaining. A lot of big ideas.

I want one ugly Tuesday.

Someone sitting in their car before going home.

Someone staying in a marriage they already know is over.

Someone saying, “I’m just going through a phase,” when they know they’re miserable.

Because the whole piece is about living the life instead of constantly explaining the life.

And that ending:" Hollow is still a sound.” That’s beautiful and haunting.

It feels like the punch the whole piece has been building toward.

The idea is very good.

Now make it a little messier.

Make it hurt.
